Snippets Volume 2 Issue 12

Dear Parents. This is the last ‘snippet’ of the term – and by the time you read its contents you will be enjoying your final weekend before the Carol Service. Needless to say we have enjoyed another very busy week – it seems to have flown by and I attended no fewer than three Christmas lunches!

Firstly, it has to be said how terrific the Christmas Fair was on Saturday. It seemed as if the JK Hall was jam packed throughout the afternoon and, with the addition of the one and only Father Christmas and the other craft areas along the main corridor, it was obviously a very impressively attended event. Thank you very much indeed for all your support. I hope you had fun buying presents, raffle tickets and other festive goodies and that when you returned home you were able to comb the candyfloss out of your hair. I would like to put on record the school’s gratitude to FOG and to Mrs Reynolds for their very considerable efforts in preparing for this annual feast of fun. Thank you to the girls also, for being so well behaved and industrious.

Good afternoon. I write my comments this week (or to be slightly more accurate, I sit beside the person typing my comments this week) wearing a black armband and feeling quite sorry for Steve McClaren. We should also have a moment’s silence for Scott Carson (I was a goalkeeper myself). At least we don’t have to look forward to gruelling, nail biting performances being put through the wringer next summer. Of course, this is all together more poignant since the introduction of our new Sunday morning football club. Perhaps Mr McClaren will have some time on his hands to come and help us.

As I anticipated, BLAST OFF! blasted off brilliantly. There was such energy and fun in evidence throughout the performance that I doubt anyone could have done anything other than thoroughly enjoy the show. Many thanks to the girls for giving up so much of their time in preparation for BLAST OFF! and we should also remember the significant contributions of the staff connected with the performance. Well done to all of you. Thank you as well to all the parents who so enthusiastically supported the event. It was indeed a good night out.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Senior Schools Exhibition. The visiting Headmistresses and Headmasters thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many of you and hailed the evening as a valuable success from their perspective. I hope it was from yours too. If you would like to follow up with a personal, more detailed discussion, I would be delighted to see you. By the time you read Snippets, the Middle Division production will either be about to happen or will have happened. Or maybe even Christmas might have happened! As I write, however, I am in anticipation of a terrific performance. I have enjoyed listening to waves of rehearsal cascading down the corridor towards my study and all the indications are good. If you do manage to read Snippets before this evening, please do remember to come and see your daughter, otherwise she might be furious with you. Doors open at 6.30pm, curtain up at 7pm.

Welcome back. I hope you all enjoyed your half term and following my previous comments you all appeared to manage to avoid us in Venice, which was grey but great. It seems we are rattling towards Christmas. I feel justified in saying this because I have just seen some Christmas advertisements on television already. Therefore, please do keep watching the website, Snippets and ParentMail so that you are well up to date with forthcoming events, fixtures and happenings. Firstly, many congratulations to Tom Curzon (who attended Nursery here at Godstowe many years ago, and whose mother is one of our council members) on his recent appointment at Caldicott as Head Boy. Would he have achieved this had he not been at our Nursery?! (I think he probably would.) And also, following the same theme, congratulations to Irfat Alam, who was at Godstowe from 1998 to 2001, and has just been made Head Girl at Queen Anne’s School.

Half term already and for me (and Mrs Gainer, I suppose) Venice beckons, although if the French have their way, the trains will be on strike. If you happen to be in Venice too, either look out for us, or avoid us! Many thanks to all of you who supported Open Morning. We were joined by 41 prospective sets of parents, which was a very impressive number and they all seem genuinely interested in the school. I should point out how much visiting families always compliment our tour guides – the girls do this so well and create a terrific impression. Thank you to all of them. Thank you again for your Harvest Festival contributions which have been distributed both locally and overseas, in particular to Romania and Moldova. The girls helped put together a very enjoyable Harvest assembly and, as usual, Mrs B-P co-ordinated the event splendidly.

More good news. Our U12 and U13 girls took the Berkhamsted Lacrosse tournament by storm. 22 schools from all around took part and I delighted to report that the U13s with just two defeats from eight matches were strong enough to win their section and be presented with a trophy. The U12s went one stage further. They were undefeated throughout the day with several polished and very strong performances and won the overall event. They also were presented with the U12 Championship trophy. It would be impossible to single out any of the girls because one of the most obvious features of the performance was the quality of their teamwork. We were the only prep school taking part and it was rather nice to have beaten Wycombe Abbey, Cheltenham Ladies’ College and Benenden along the way (he said, rubbing his hands). Congratulations to all girls concerned.

Another busy week comes to an end although I still have three sets of prospective parents to show around today! I hope you will be impressed by the individual photographs that were taken on Wednesday and yesterday. The proofs will be arriving in your half term pack and the photographer has stressed that he needs your orders immediately after half term, please. You may be interested to know that Eleri (Uppers) took part in the Horse of the Year Show this week. I look forward to hearing about her successes on Monday morning.

Good grief. Exeat already. It’ll soon be Christmas. I hope very much that all of the girls have had so much packed into the first four weeks that for your sake they sleep all weekend. We are sending some information today regarding the ‘Hoodies’, which are available each year. Samples will soon be available to view in Reception and in Lodge. I would urge you to get your orders in as soon as possible so that they can be ready in time for the Christmas Fair.

Boarding at Gate 3 or 4 or wherever, for that matter. Look out for your envelope containing Boarding Passes for day girls in Form I upwards. These can be redeemed at any time, singularly or collectively, in return for boarding nights in the house of your choice. This will be at our expense so that your girls can have the opportunity to gain some experience and to see whether or not they might enjoy becoming boarders either at Godstowe in the future or in preparation for senior school. This will be subject to availability. I stress the point because boarding itself is becoming so popular again that there are only a few beds in each house available. So, that’s good news on the one hand, but it is going to mean enthusiastic girls will have to sometimes be patient. Get your bookings in early!

Welcome to all our new faces, and how many there are! I’m pleased to say they appear to already settled in and my thanks to everyone for helping them to feel part of the furniture as quickly as they have. I should remind you that if you have any concerns please do contact us at the earliest opportunity so that we can help resolve matters for you. Our new staff have not yet been found crying in the corner, so I can only assume that your children have been kind to them.
