The Library

1900

Godstowe was founded in 1900

The Library is centrally located next to Reception. It can seat 26 girls and also features a cosy corner where they can curl up on a beanbag and read. It contains more than 8,000 books plus a set of Chromebooks for internet access.

The stock includes a wide range of fiction for all ages and reading abilities, with new titles being purchased regularly. We also make sure that there is an up-to-date choice of non-fiction to support the curriculum and the interests of the girls. In addition we provide a selection of newspapers and magazines.

The Library is fully computerised, using the Eclipse system.

Our Library is run by a Chartered Librarian, who is devoted to promoting reading across the school and ensuring that the pupils are also information literate. She fills the Library with exciting books, organises book fairs, competitions and activities, and provides individual reading advice to all pupils.

Classes have a weekly English lesson in the Library.  As well as time for quiet reading, the girls are introduced to new authors and genres of fiction, and learn to use the Library for research. We use the Accelerated Reader system to support our reading.

The Library is open every lunch time for those who wish to change their books, study, read or take an Accelerated Reader quiz. Supervised prep sessions also take place there from 4.30 to 6.30pm.

At Godstowe we understand that reading is the key to achieving in all areas of the curriculum. Fiction stimulates the imagination and provides a safe environment to explore new ideas and experiences. A fluent and regular reader develops vocabulary, spelling and written style as well as the ability to concentrate and work alone.

Because of this our Library is more than just a room full of books. We try to make it a lively, active place which puts reading firmly at the heart of the school.
